This Podcast is dedicated to the lath plaster and drywall industry. One of the main goals for the weekly episodes is to promote our industry with the insight of what it’s like to work in construction and to educate others by watching and listening to the stories of the personal experiences, lifestyle and skills that others have learned from working in the industry.

We hope to bring the construction industry in a new direction by showing the work life balance; that is associated with what can be a great life long career and the possibility to move up in companies with hard work and dedication. A college education is not needed to make a great living for you and your family.

How To get Started

The Carpenters Union is a great place to start. Also by joining, you can learn the skills and techniques needed to build some of the most iconic buildings in the United States Of America. This will not be easy, it will take some time. After four years you will become a Journeyman. This industry has always believed in hands-on training which is taught by respected craftsmen, that have dedicated their lives to the industry.

Getting work

The construction industry is very flexible, there are many great union companies out there, constantly looking for people, so they can teach them the elite skills it takes to have them tackle any job, regardless of the complexity. Construction is a very stable career for those who are willing to be dependable, work hard, and work smart. New buildings must always be built also old one’s must be maintained. For this reason, job stability can always be a certain thing for the future of your career.

Also in Episode 31 Joe Riley talks about his two sons that both took separate paths for their career. One son came into the industry and another son went to get a college degree.

What was the outcome of their decisions? The eldest son who joined the construction industry bought a house in his early 20s and the younger son gathered debt to get a college education. After 4 years in the trade you can be making up to $130,000 a year, with great health benefits and retirement.
