Field Furring Strips (Title 24 Energy Code Application) Diamond<>Furr®

Description

Diamond-Furr Furring Strips have and patented design that offers the first real solution to the moisture intrusion problems that have plagued the plastering industry for decades.

The 18 gauge Furring Strips (pt # DF-375) are designed for polyiso & standard 3-coat plaster. They are installed over the polyiso insulation, weather barrier or directly to the substrate when liquid applied air / water barriers are used. The Strips are attached to vertical framing members every 16” using wafer-head screws and the metal lath is then secured to the Furring Strips using 18ga tie wire through the provided attachment holes.

The result is a flexible connection which reduces cracking and effectively
eliminates over 55% of the fastener penetrations through the weather barrier in the field and 100% elimination when a liquid barrier is applied! Diamond-Furr trims also provide uninterrupted 3/8” furring for superior lath embedment and completely remove the potential for torn weather barriers due to over tightened screws. For warranty purposes, please refrain from using spray foam with this system.

Diamond-Furr Strips works in conjunction with our patented Diamond-Furr Termination Trims which eliminate 100% of the fastener penetrations through the moisture barrier around critical areas such as doors and windows.

We recommend using the complete Diamond-Furr System for the greatest
available protection against moisture intrusion and a significant reduction in liability exposure. Diamond-Furr is also available with a longer ground size to comply with the needs of the new energy code requirements.

Diamond<>Furr® Pat with Owens Corning Thermafiber®

The following technical specifications outline the installation of Diamond<>Furr® Pat
DF-375 Field Furring Strips
in conjunction with Owens Corning Thermafiber® RainBarrier® Continuous Insulation (ci) High Compressive Max (110 & 140) mineral wool.

System Components

  • Insulation: Owens Corning Thermafiber® RainBarrier® ci High Compressive Max (110 & 140) Mineral Wool.
  • Available Thicknesses: 1″, 2″, and 4″.
  • Furring: Diamond<>Furr® Pat DF-375 Field Furring Strips.
  • Optional Barrier: 15-minute weather-resistive paper may be applied over the insulation for extra water proofing and providing a slip sheet if required.

Installation Guidelines

  1. Placement: Install the Thermafiber® RainBarrier® ci Max insulation boards directly against the substrate after the specified AWRB has been applied.
  2. Furring Attachment: Diamond<>Furr® Pat DF-375 Field Furring Strips are to be installed over the face of the mineral wool insulation.
  3. Fastening: Secure the furring strips through the insulation and into the vertical framing members with minimum #8 zinc plated bugle head or modified truss screws. Fasteners must penetrate metal studs 3 treads minimum.
  4. Spacing: DF-375 furring strips must be fastened 6″ on center to the vertical framing, to ensure structural integrity and proper support for the 7/8” lath and plaster system. All 3.4 metal lath shall be wire tied to the DF-375 furring strips at a maximum 6-1/2” on center.
  5. Water Management (Optional): While mineral wool provides inherent moisture resistance, a layer of 15-minute paper may be installed over the exterior face of the insulation prior to the furring attachment for additional protection.

Advantages of the System

  • Thermal Performance: Eliminates significant thermal bridging by using the Diamond<>Furr® Pat system to create True continuous insulation.
  • Fire Resistance: Thermafiber® mineral wool is non-combustible and fire-resistant, providing enhanced safety for the building envelope.
  • Compressive Strength: The High Compressive Max (110 & 140) rating ensures the insulation maintains its thickness and R-value when furring strips are fastened tightly against the insulation.
  • Zero Fastener Penetrations When Diamond<>Furr® Pat Trims are installed; all fastener penetrations are eliminated at any termination point through the final AWRB reducing liability for all parties.

What is the primary purpose of Diamond-Furr® Field Furring Strips?

These strips are designed to provide a secure lath attachment point over continuous insulation (c.i.) systems. The system integrates four critical steps into one product: Trim, Flashing, Furring, and Lath Attachment.

How does this system help with Title 24 Energy Code compliance?

By facilitating the use of high-R-value Polyiso insulation, Diamond-Furr helps buildings meet strict energy efficiency requirements. It allows for a more effective thermal envelope by reducing thermal bridging and managing the thickness of the insulation layer efficiently.

How does Diamond-Furr® reduce moisture intrusion?

Standard installations often require hundreds of screws that puncture the moisture barrier. Diamond-Furr® eliminates 100% of penetrations at termination points and over 55% of field penetrations. By utilizing tie-wire connections, it keeps the moisture barrier intact and reduces the need for expensive “peel and stick” flashing.

What are the benefits of using Polyiso insulation with this system?
  • Weight: A 4×12 sheet of Polyiso weighs 88% less than traditional 4×8 gypsum sheathing, reducing worker fatigue.

  • Safety: It avoids hazardous fiberglass dust or polluting polystyrene particles.

  • Efficiency: It is easier to cut and provides a higher insulation value ($R-6.5$ per inch).

  • Dual Function: Foil-faced Polyiso acts as an air/moisture barrier, often removing the need for a second layer of building paper.

Does this system help prevent stucco cracking?

Yes. Because the system incorporates tie-wire connections instead of rigid screws through the water barrier, there is more flexibility. Furthermore, the strips provide a continuous 3/8″ furring, ensuring the best possible lath embedment in the stucco, which is key to long-term durability.

Can this system be used with conventional plaster?

While optimized for Title 24 Continuous Insulation applications, the Diamond-Furr® system is also available for 7/8″ conventional plaster applications.

Does the system meet fire safety standards?

Yes. When used with Polyiso insulation, the system can meet NFPA 285 fire testing requirements without the need for additional glass-mat gypsum sheathing, further reducing material costs and installation time.

Should the Field Furring Strips be used alone?

For maximum effectiveness and to ensure the moisture-barrier integrity mentioned above, Field Furring Strips should be accompanied by the Complete Diamond-Furr® System.
